Rotor Overhauls

Ansaldo Thomassen developed procedures for repair and re-assembly of gas turbine rotors by using fundamental and basic knowledge of rotor assemblies and rotor dynamics. Rotor overhaul activities and procedures are optimized during many years of services performed on heavy-duty gas turbines. Advanced methods are developed to assess the condition and remaining life of rotor elements to deal with the aging of gas turbines. Before starting repair activities, the history of the rotor is reviewed to pre-assess the condition of the rotor elements and the compressor and turbine blades.

The rotor is disassembled as far as required to complete the necessary inspections and repair works. Rotor elements are non-destructively inspected and together with the evaluation of the rotor history, the condition and remaining life of the rotor and its elements is assessed. A plan is made for reconditioning or replacement of rotor elements tailored to the operational future of the gas turbine and customer requirements.

For re-assembly of the rotor, all rotor elements are measured to microns and balanced. This data is then used to calculate the optimum stacking position and sequence of all elements of the compressor and turbine rotor. All sub-assemblies are measured and balanced to verify calculated goals and determine the final assembly of the unit rotor. The final assembly condition will ensure optimum dynamic behavior and enable reliable operation of the gas turbine unit.
